For sharpening, it uses a round aluminum ceramic rod, which is perfect for sharpening virtually any type of steel and blade. The medium gr it allows you to pre-sharpen your knife and sharpen it quickly, so it is the optimal choice for a stand-alone whetstone.
There are rubber caps on the ends of the rod, which allow you to hold the whetstone firmly between your thumb and forefinger.
